I wanted to speak to balancing work and play as an entrepreneur.
The word balance gets thrown around so much and in my opinion, I don’t believe balance really exists and I don’t believe it’s something that we should necessarily be striving for.
Let me explain…
For many of us, I believe the idea of creating balance of work and play can create this pressure that is just not necessary and doesn’t always serve us. It’s natural for us to be in seasons where both of these ebb and flow.
So, instead of finding balance, during periods of time where I know I’m going to be busy. I find it more helpful to create strategies to manage my energy and infuse some space and fun in my life.
Here are some examples of what this may look like for me:
Setting boundaries around how much I’m on my phone and when I look at it
I know that for me, checking my phone as soon as I wake up and before I go to sleep zaps me of my energy and takes up more brain space than it needs to. So I set a timer for how long I’m on Instagram for example and make sure I put my phone away from me during the evening.
Prioritising sleep and movement outside
I know that I’m a better version of myself when I’m well-slept, have moved my body in some way and spent time outdoors every single day. During times where I’m busy, I prioritise these things even more, because I know that they’re good for my mental and physical health and will give me more energy in the long run.
Time blocking my calendar
I love all things tech and productivity, however, the #1 productivity tool that serves me is time blocking. Everything goes into my calendar, including sleep, coaching calls, content creation, workouts – all of it. This helps me make sure that I’m not over-doing my to-do list. Because everything on my to-do list, goes into my calendar, I know that I won’t overbook myself because the space is just not in my calendar. The other thing that this also helps me do is stay super-focused on exactly what I need to do that I know will move my business forward the most.
Leaving space for spontaneity and fun
Expanding on the above, I don’t overbook myself and make sure there is PLENTY of white space in my calendar. Especially during busy periods, I make sure there’s room for spontaneity and fun. Things like seeing my friends, a dinner out, reading in the arvo, whatever it is. I make sure I leave plenty of space for rest and fun. This is what creating an easeful business looks like.
